    1899-1964
       Nacido Samuel Neufeld, hermano de Sigmund Neufeld, futuro jefe de produccion de PRC, dirige cortometrajes desde 1926, y largometrajes desde 1933. Probablemente el mas prolifico realizador norteamericano de la era sonora, dirigio, sobre todo, westerns. Por sus manos paso una parte importante de los viejos heroes del genero, en peliculas de una hora de duracion y argumentos eternamente repetidos. Solo leer su filmografia produce cierto vertigo. Establecerla rigurosamente es una tarea ardua, especialmente en lo relativo al orden cronologico estricto, por lo que en esta ocasion mas que en ninguna otra hay que entender que ese orden es susceptible de correccion. Utiliza los seudonimos de Peter Stewart y Sherman Scott. Se ha prescindido de tres aparentes largometrajes, situados al final de su carrera y obtenidos, cada uno de ellos, por super posicion de dos episodios del serial televisivo “Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans”. Aunque el nivel medio de los filmes de Sam Newfeld es realmente bajo, hay que citar dos curiosidades: Harlem on the Prairie (1937) esta interpretado integramente por negros, y The Terror of Tiny Town (1938), por enanos, que se mueven en decorados de tamano normal.

    1902-1986
       Nacido en Boston, a Ray Nazarro se le asocia con dos criterios: Columbia Films, para la que hizo la mayor parte de sus peliculas, y rapidez, la que demostro entre 1945 y 1958, tiempo en que dirigio ochenta filmes, a un ritmo que en algunas temporadas supero el de uno al mes. A pesar de todo, sus westerns, que lo fueron la mayoria de sus peliculas, no resultaron nada desdenables por termino medio, mostrando una notable habilidad para desarrollar los argumentos que se le encomendaban, virtud que se agudiza en algunas de sus producciones de los anos 50. Aunque su primer largometraje es Outlaws of the Rockies, ya habia dirigido en 1932, en este caso peliculas de corta duracion. Termina su carrera en Europa.

       Enormemente fecundo, este especialista del western (rodo un centenar, entre mudos y sonoros) no desdeno acercarse a otros generos. El resultado es un centenar y medio sobrado de peliculas, en las que no faltan detalles de buen hacer, aunque el ex ceso sumerge el todo en la atonia. Se hizo director con Thomas Ince y logro algun western mudo de buen nivel, como The Narrow Trail (1917), con Wil liam S. Hart, para quien siempre fue su director favorito, co mo protagonista. Trabajo basicamente para Colum bia y Monogram, y hay quien afirma que si Hil lyer hu biera dispuesto de presupuestos holgados, su nombre se incluiria hoy entre los grandes del western.

       Realizador y guionista, Alan James, que popularizo su seudonimo, Alvin J. Neitz, repartio sus casi 80 realizaciones entre el cine mudo y el sonoro, a partes iguales. Curiosamente, y a pesar de que ambas funciones, la de director y la de guionista, las simultaneo, no es excesiva la cifra de las peliculas en que de sempeno ambos cometidos. Fue todo lo prolifico que las circunstancias –peliculas de una hora de duracion en productos baratos de consumo inmediato– aconsejaban. Casi la tercera parte de sus westerns sonoros los protagonizo el actor Ken Maynard.

       Entre 1927 y 1954, ano de su prematura muerte debida a un ataque cardiaco, realiza un total aproximado de 120 peliculas, de las que unas veinte son cortometrajes. Se dedica, especialmente, al western, sobre todo para Universal y Monogram. Es un director modesto, sin estilo visible que, como tantos otros, trabaja para las sucesivas estrellas de la epoca.

Su mundo es el del western, al que dedico la inmensa mayoria de su produccion, obras cuyo presupuesto y sus inquietudes artisticas eran igualmente reducidos.

       Prolifico director, capaz de rodar entre seis y siete filmes por ano, durante treinta, ajustandose siempre al presupuesto, cuya filmografia en el western se centra en la serie del cowboy cantante Roy Rogers, en algunas peliculas de la correspondiente serie del tambien cowboy cantante Gene Autry, y en la reunion, de dos en dos, de diversos capitulos del serial televisivo dedicado a Wild Hill Hickcok, con Guy Ma dison y Andy Devine como protagonistas. Estos ultimos, un total de 28 episodios distribuidos en catorce peliculas, no figuran aqui, dado su caracter de filmes realizados para TV que no han sufrido modificacion alguna antes de su pase en sa las de cine. Falle cido en 1980, puede resultar sorprendente que Mc - Donald firme una ultima pelicula como director en 1994. Se explica porque el largometraje en cuestion esta formado por escenas tomadas de otro serial televisivo, dedicado en esta ocasion al famosisimo Wyatt Earp, y escenas nuevas ro dadas para completar el metraje. Estas ultimas, evidentemente, no fueron rodadas por McDonald, sino por el que figura en los titulos de credito como co-director: Paul Landres.
